Our children are regularly exposed to images, news and sights of pain and suffering in today’s turbulent, fiercely competitive world. It has now become essential for parents to instill the value of charity in children from a young age, to help them grow up into compassionate, caring human beings.

Charity is an emotion, a sense of understanding, feeling and respecting others’ needs, which children need to start appreciating early in life. The first lessons of charity begin right at home, when your child learns to share his favorite toys with another child and starts helping mom feed the pets.

Charity should begin with you, the parent. Parents are role models for their children. Children readily copy whatever their parents do and whenever you take part in any charitable activity or make a donation to some charity, let your children know.

You can donate clothes and food items to charitable organizations, participate in charitable and voluntary activities in the neighborhood or even drop some money into donation boxes kept at grocery stores and gas stations to help charitable causes.

There is more joy in giving than in receiving. Once you help your children understand this, they will learn to sympathize with the pain and needs of others and also appreciate the necessity of doing their part to make this world a more caring and kind place to live.
